ELEGANCE MOONPHASE "HOKUSAI": THE UNION OF TWO MASTER ARTS FOR CENTURY'S 60TH ANNIVERSARY.
Press release
On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, Maison CENTURY dedicates its watchmaking art to a masterpiece of Japanese culture with the ELEGANCE MOONPHASE “HOKUSAI”. This timepiece transforms a legendary woodblock print into an everlasting “Jewel of Time.” Crafted from a 30 mm sapphire with 48 hand-cut facets, the piece reveals a deep blue mother-of-pearl dial where the iconic wave meets the poetry of the moon phase. Powered by the exclusive Megalith structural construction, this creation celebrates six decades of independence through a masterful fusion of technical rigor and artistic virtuosity.
An Artistic Odyssey
Since its founding in 1966, Maison CENTURY has cultivated a vision where timekeeping becomes a quest for permanence. Celebrating six decades of passion and creative freedom, and remaining faithful to the family philosophy now led by Philip W.A. Klingenberg, the ELEGANCE MOONPHASE “HOKUSAI” follows in the footsteps of the “Horu” and “Jungfrau” masterpieces. Where Alpine peaks once reached for the sky, this edition chooses to celebrate the maritime horizon. CENTURY reinterprets the masterwork of Katsushika Hokusai, the Japanese ukiyo-e master whose iconic print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” embodies nature’s moving power. This timepiece thus invites you to a meditation on motion and eternity, offering a serene balance between the force of the elements and the precision of a world-unique expertise.
The Prism of Sapphire
Each case is a marvel of refraction, born from the hands of the “Artisans of Light” in Nidau. Cut from a sapphire gemstone of extreme hardness (Mohs scale 9), this 30 mm piece reveals 48 facets polished with jewellery-grade rigor, capturing every ray of light to transform it into a fascinating interplay of mirrors. Beneath this crystal dome, the deep blue mother-of-pearl dial reveals the majesty of the wave, punctuated by the brilliance of six precious diamonds. This visual dialogue between mineral and organic matter highlights the purity of a design where every detail – from the palladium metallization to the stylized hands – contributes to a sculptural aesthetic of perfect unity.
Precision and Structure
The integrity of this timepiece rests on the Megalith system, an exclusive structural construction that creates a sapphire monolith of absolute resistance. This major innovation guarantees a remarkable water resistance of 10 Bar (100 metres), nobly protecting a Swiss Made Quartz calibre of unfailing punctuality. The caseback and stainless steel bracelet, with matte and polished finishes, embrace the wrist with refined suppleness, making this timepiece an adventurous companion capable of defying time’s cycles without ever losing its radiance.
Philip W.A. Klingenberg, CEO of CENTURY: “With the ELEGANCE MOONPHASE ‘HOKUSAI’, we celebrate 60 years of history by creating a dialogue between two absolute forms of art: traditional Japanese woodblock printing and our watchmaking savoir-faire sculpted in sapphire. It is a tribute to culture and to the timelessness of great masterpieces, where human creativity transcends eras to become eternal.”
